How Does CBD Work?

Scientists are constantly making advancements in cannabis research. As of 2019, research suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) may support a variety of ailments, such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, auto-immune conditions, and more. For decades, however, there was limited research on CBD and its effects on the human body. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system provided scientists with a better understanding.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

It was not until the 1990’s that scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system serves to regulate homeostasis and other bodily functions, such as organ function, muscular function, digestion, mood, inflammation, and more.

This system produces molecules called endocannabinoids, which support balance and are produced as needed. This system also contains endocannabinoid receptors. These receptors can be found throughout the body. When there is an imbalance, endocannabinoids bind with these receptors to initiate regulation. Once the endocannabinoids have stabilized bodily functions, enzymes break down the molecules.

The Endocannabinoid System and CBD

Scientists found that cannabis contains cannabinoids that mimic the function and structure of the endocannabinoids found in the human body. CBD is one of these cannabinoids. Once CBD enters the body, the cannabinoid binds to the receptors and supports the endocannabinoid system in its efforts to stabilize the body. CBD is also known to support the production of endocannabinoids.

With this knowledge, scientists now have a better understanding of how CBD may support a variety of ailments.
